Supervisor Chuck Washington Shares Solution for Thousand Palms’ Party House Problem
For years, residents in Thousand Palms have struggled with short-term rentals turning into disruptive party houses. Supervisor Chuck Washington, who successfully addressed similar issues in Temecula’s wine country, shared his expertise on the Roggin Report to offer a path forward for Thousand Palms.
In Temecula, Washington implemented a robust solution to curtail the problem, emphasizing enforcement as the cornerstone of his strategy. “We realized the situation was out of control—short-term rentals were popping up without oversight,” he explained. His approach included allocating additional funds for code enforcement officers and sheriff deputies, ensuring immediate responses to late-night disturbances caused by party houses.
“Party houses ruin neighborhoods,” Washington said. “When you rent a short-term rental, it’s still a house first, and the residents in that neighborhood deserve peace and quiet. Their rights come first.”
Reflecting on the situation in Thousand Palms, Washington urged similar actions to protect neighborhoods from ongoing chaos. “The key is enforcement,” he stressed. “Without it, no law will make a difference.” Washington acknowledged that some short-term rental owners may resist stricter rules due to potential financial impacts, but emphasized that prioritizing community well-being is essential.
While Thousand Palms falls outside his district, Washington expressed his commitment to collaborating with Supervisor Manuel Perez, who oversees the area. “Supervisor Perez and I have worked on short-term rental issues before. I’ll bring this to his attention and push for action to protect these neighborhoods,” he promised.
Washington’s proven success in Temecula offers a model for Thousand Palms, giving residents hope for relief from the ongoing disruptions. His focus on neighborhood-first policies underscores the need for decisive action to restore peace and stability in the Coachella Valley.

Palm Springs firefighters responded Thursday to a report of a person struck by lightning in the Chino Canyon area. The person was transported to a hospital for medical treatment.
