Volunteers of Friends of the Desert Mountains Share the Wonders of Local Wilderness
Tonight, a group of passionate volunteers in the valley is helping preserve the legacy of our desert mountains and introducing others to the area's stunning landscapes and rich history. The Friends of the Desert Mountains, who serve as the support group for the Santa Rosa San Jacinto National Monument, are committed to keeping the monument in good shape and educating the public about the desert environment.
On a recent hike, volunteer Rob led a group through the 2.1-mile Chuckwalla Trail Loop in Rancho Mirage, explaining the fascinating desert flora along the way. "The little bushes are the brittle bushes," he said, noting their historical use by the Cahuilla tribe for their sap, which had painkilling properties.
As they trekked through the desert, Rob pointed out various sights, including kangaroo rat and pocket rat burrows, as well as pack rat nests made of sticks and twigs. He emphasized the importance of preparation for desert hikes, especially when it comes to hydration. "You need to certainly have lots of water, more than you think you need," he advised, urging hikers to bring at least two liters of water for the trail.
For those seeking an adventure, the Friends of the Desert Mountains offer free guided hikes, with opportunities to contribute donations to support the continued exploration and preservation of the area. With over 300 miles of trails within the National Monument, there’s always more to discover.
