Altadena Fire Victims Find Refuge in Palm Springs, Hope to Rebuild
The devastating Eaton Fire has forced many Altadena residents to seek refuge outside their community, including Todd Smoyer and his husband. After losing their home in the 14,000-acre wildfire, the couple has temporarily relocated to Palm Springs, a place they have visited frequently and associate with peace.
Smoyer, a visual effects producer, recalls the heartbreaking moment he returned home on January 7th, realizing he had little time to save his belongings. He managed to grab clothes, dog food, and a few pieces of art, but much of his life’s work was lost in the flames. “Feeling like I lost… not my life, but my soul life—everything that represented it—is something I struggle with,” he shared.
Beyond losing their mid-century ranch home, which they had lived in for four years, Smoyer says he misses the sense of community the most. “More than anything, I just want to see my neighbors, give them all a hug. I feel disconnected from my neighborhood right now,” he said, expressing guilt over being away while others in Altadena are still dealing with the aftermath.
While the couple has signed a lease in Long Beach and received their insurance payout, their ultimate goal is to return and rebuild in Altadena. “That was our dream home,” Smoyer said, holding onto hope for the future.

Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery are one step closer to completing their $110 billion merger after a coalition of 12 state attorneys general reached a settlement with Paramount. A high-speed police chase in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, came to a dramatic end when the vehicle plunged into Lake Como. Dashcam video released by police shows the pursuit before the car crashes into the water. Four people inside the vehicle were pulled from the lake with no serious injuries reported.
