Power Play in CVUSD: Special Election Drama and Residency Scandal
A high-stakes battle is brewing in Coachella Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) as a special election in March could determine the balance of power on the school board. But an unexpected twist may shift the playing field entirely.
Jocelyn Vargas, a current school board member seeking re-election, has reportedly purchased a new home—outside of the district she represents. Legally, that means she should step down immediately, but with election day fast approaching, her next move is uncertain.
In 2017, a similar case saw Frank Becerra charged with a felony for misrepresenting his residency. He ultimately pled down to a misdemeanor and resigned. If Vargas follows the law, her departure could clear the way for Adrian Rodriguez, the only remaining candidate eligible to serve.
The timing is crucial. Vargas signed the deed to her new home on January 18, giving her exactly 60 days before she must legally establish residency there. The election is scheduled for March 4, with results certified on March 18. If she wins and resigns, the current board majority—already accused of intimidation and questionable business dealings—would handpick her replacement, keeping their control intact.
Board member Valerie Garcia, in an interview, expressed hope that Vargas would “do the right thing” and resign. However, with union-backed candidates and political power at stake, the outcome remains uncertain.
Voters now face a critical question: Will this election bring accountability, or will the status quo persist? The coming weeks will reveal whether integrity prevails in CVUSD.

Palm Springs is mourning the loss of beloved entertainer James “Gypsy” Haake, who has died at 94. Haake began his entertainment career at just 19 years old as a Broadway chorus dancer. After retiring from the stage, he returned to performing at 82, becoming the host of Carnival Cabaret at Oscars in downtown Palm Springs.
