Modernism Show in Palm Springs Highlights Iconic 20th Century Design
The Palm Springs Convention Center is currently hosting the highly anticipated Modernism Show, featuring over 130 exhibitors from around the globe, celebrating the best of vintage 20th-century designs and contemporary 21st-century art. This year’s event showcases collections of furniture, decorative arts, and fine arts that span the design movements of the 20th century, with a significant focus on mid-century modernism. Guests were given the opportunity to explore iconic pieces that reflect the bold and innovative designs of the era, from streamlined furniture to striking architectural decor. L.A. Marler, a renowned artist whose work focuses on mid-century media and technology. Her pieces, which feature analog items like typewriters, radios, televisions, and cameras, evoke nostalgia for a simpler, more stable era. Marler, who describes her art as a reflection of storytelling tools from a quieter time, explained that these objects were integral to the creative process for writers and photographers in the mid-20th century. Her work has earned a place in popular culture, appearing in TV shows such as Friends with Benefits, Two and a Half Men, and Criminal Minds. Marler’s unique take on mid-century technology continues to captivate audiences and complements the broader themes of modernism showcased at the event.

Nearly a year after wildfires tore through Mountain Center, the scars are still visible along the Palms to Pines Highway. Now, fire crews are working to repair those burn areas and reduce the risk of flooding, erosion and mudslides when heavy rain arrives. The work includes fire-line suppression repairs, water bars and other measures designed to slow rainwater and keep burned soil from washing away. CAL FIRE Riverside County Battalion Chief Ryan Lubin says the steep terrain, dry brush and limited access continue to create challenges for mountain communities. With El Niño conditions expected to bring periods of heavy rain, officials say preparing now could help protect homes and communities from the aftermath of wildfire.
