Artist To Speak On Future Of Palm Springs Aids Memorial Sculpture
The Palm Springs AIDS Memorial Task Force has plans to spread the new design for its long-anticipated memorial sculpture. Originally envisioned to honor those lost to the AIDS epidemic, the initial design faced concerns over its layout. In response, designer Phillip K. Smith III collaborated with local residents to ensure the revised concept better reflected their vision.
The new design, titled “Well of Tears,” will be installed in Downtown Park and aims to serve as a space for contemplation, remembrance, and education. The sculpture will prominently feature three messages: “Forever Remembered, Forever Loved, and Forever Celebrated.” Task Force officials emphasize that community involvement has been crucial in shaping the memorial’s final form.
“The journey to getting to where we are has been really transformative,” said Stuart Kent, a representative of the task force. “We listened very closely, and Phillip listened very closely to all the input. We feel that the new memorial design responds to those initial concerns.”
With an estimated cost of $1.2 million, the task force has already raised more than $600,000 toward funding the sculpture. The goal is to have it installed by World AIDS Day, a significant milestone in the ongoing fight against HIV/AIDS.
To further engage the public, a presentation at the Desert Star, part of the Salon for the Parched series, will offer residents another opportunity to share their thoughts. Organizers hope that increased awareness and support will help bring the project to completion, ensuring a meaningful tribute to those affected by the epidemic.

Nearly a year after wildfires tore through Mountain Center, the scars are still visible along the Palms to Pines Highway. Now, fire crews are working to repair those burn areas and reduce the risk of flooding, erosion and mudslides when heavy rain arrives. The work includes fire-line suppression repairs, water bars and other measures designed to slow rainwater and keep burned soil from washing away.
