Forever Marilyn Statue Set for Relocation in Palm Springs After Four Years
The Forever Marilyn statue, a landmark in downtown Palm Springs for the past four years, is set to be relocated by the end of the week to its final resting place. The 17-ton statue, which has captured the attention of locals and tourists alike, will soon be moved a mere 100 feet to its new location. Reliable Crane Company conducted a test lift of the statue in the morning, drawing a crowd of curious onlookers. The statue was hoisted 60 feet into the air, raising questions from many about the rationale behind the move.
“It’s just weird to me that you move something that big, just a measly 100 feet,” said one local. “I understand the need for the street to be open, but to move the statue from one spot to another so close is puzzling.”
Despite the mixed reactions, officials and contractors are confident in the decision. The move has been costly, with estimates of up to half a million dollars for the crane work and additional legal and logistical fees, bringing the total expense of the relocation to over a million dollars.
“Our Midwestern sensibilities would say that moving the statue at this cost is a little ridiculous,” another observer commented, voicing concerns about the financial implications.
However, city officials argue that the move will improve the line of sight from the street to the nearby art museum. Officials explaining how this is a compromise for everyone involved. A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office says it had secured protective orders against Kim before a judge later resolved her cases as misdemeanors, released her from custody and terminated those orders. Now, Kim is expected to be arraigned in connection with her husband’s death. Court records allege the weapon used was a flagpole.
