Coachella City Council Member’s Husband Released on Bond After Immigration Arrest
FBI agents detained the husband of Coachella City Council member Yadira Perez on Monday morning outside a Walmart store in Coachella.
Yadira Perez was left devastated after witnessing her husband's arrest by federal agents. “My family was just separated. They have taken my kids farther. Those are the desperate cries of help,” said Yadira.
According to Yadira, the arrest took place without warning. “As we left Walmart, they just surrounded me. They said he had a deportation order. We’ve lived in Coachella for so many years. Why now?” she explained. Despite the shock, Yadira said the agents never showed any paperwork or legal order confirming the deportation. Her husband was taken directly to the San Bernardino Detention Center.
The FBI has confirmed that such arrests are part of an ongoing operation to target undocumented individuals with criminal histories and outstanding warrants, in collaboration with ICE agents. The focus of these actions is not related to standard ICE raids, according to the FBI.
The arrested man has a criminal history, with a felony drug charge from 1994 and more recently a case of evading arrest. The charges for his recent detention stem from illegal reentry into the country after a previous deportation.
Since the arrest on Monday, the Perez family has been seeking answers, and the emotional strain is palpable. “They never gave me any order,” Yadira continued. “They just... took him.” Yadira’s family has been working with immigration attorneys in hopes of securing their loved one’s release.
After a day of uncertainty, a judge has approved the release of the arrested man on bond, allowing him to fight the case from the outside.
Yadira remains hopeful, but her focus is on keeping her family together while navigating the challenges of the legal system. She stated, “I’ve been talking to my husband over the phone. He just tells me to keep the family together.”
