FBI Arrests Husband of Coachella City Council Member Yadira Perez, Raising Questions of Motive and Timing
🚨 Coachella’s political landscape is in turmoil after federal agents arrested the husband of newly elected City Council member Yadira Perez.
The FBI and Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) detained Perez’s husband in a Walmart parking lot in Coachella—a moment captured on video and now trending across social media platforms. Federal officials cite his prior deportation and reentry as grounds for the arrest, noting he also has previous criminal convictions. His case file is expected to be unsealed tomorrow.
Perez, married for 28 years, expressed shock and heartbreak during an exclusive interview.
“I just want my husband back,” she said, adding that her husband was her biggest supporter during her council campaign. “He motivated me to fight for transparency, unity, and safety for our city.”
Coachella is recognized as a sanctuary city, but federal agencies retain authority for targeted immigration enforcement. The timing has raised concerns of political retaliation—Perez’s election shifted the balance of power in the city council toward a transparency-focused majority, ruffling feathers among former leadership.
Two theories have emerged:
Random detection: Her husband’s past conviction flagged him during routine federal database checks.
Political motivation: Perez’s outspoken push for accountability may have drawn attention to her family, with some alleging the arrest was a targeted move to disrupt the new council majority.
Immigration attorney Hadley Jones confirmed that the arrest was likely the result of a targeted enforcement operation.
“Agents usually surveil their target for days, learning routines before making an arrest,” Jones said. “Fortunately, Perez’s husband will have an opportunity to present his case before a judge.”
Adding intrigue, Jesus Gonzalez, a key figure in Coachella politics, mentioned Perez’s husband unexpectedly during a city meeting prior to the arrest, sparking further speculation.
If her husband is deported, Perez says she will resign her council seat and leave the country with him—potentially creating a power vacuum in the city council.
Residents and community leaders voiced mixed reactions—some expressing sympathy, others raising concerns about public safety and political manipulation.
As the case unfolds, many in Coachella are left grappling with uncertainty.
