Rancho Mirage Tackles Cell Service Issues

Rancho Mirage has been battling with unreliable cell phone service for years, frustrating residents and businesses alike. Local business employee's, like Egypt Johnson, a barber at Presidential Cuts, have found it especially difficult to stay connected with clients. Johnson, who uses T-Mobile, reports frequent dropped calls, making it hard to book appointments or stay in touch with customers.

"It makes it really inconvenient, especially when a client is trying to reach out to me," he said. "We might get disconnected, and it's hard for me to communicate with them or hear them."

However, Rancho Mirage city leaders have heard the concerns and are actively working to resolve the issue. Over the past year, the Rancho Mirage City Council has been collaborating with CelPlan, a global technology company, to assess and improve cell phone coverage across the city. According to City Council member Michael O'Keefe, this problem is not just an inconvenience—it’s a matter of public safety and economic development.

"This is a quality of life issue. I also consider it a safety issue, public safety, personal safety, and economic development," O'Keefe explained. "You have to have reliable cell phone reception 24 hours a day, seven days a week."

The city’s approach has involved using CelPlan’s expertise to conduct tests on various cell phone carriers, including Verizon and T-Mobile, while also identifying potential interferences that could be affecting service. The tests are meant to pinpoint areas with poor reception and determine where additional infrastructure might be needed. Currently, Rancho Mirage’s cell coverage sits at around 40%, but officials believe that adding more cell towers could increase coverage to more than 70%.

"If each of the carriers were to add five or six more towers, we would get well over 70%," O'Keefe said. This improvement would help ensure residents and businesses can rely on consistent service, which is increasingly important in today’s digital age.

A key development in the city’s plan is the introduction of an interactive coverage map on the Rancho Mirage city website. This tool allows residents and business owners to check the cell service in their area based on their carrier. For example, Egypt Johnson’s T-Mobile service has been particularly prone to dropped calls in the area.

"With the crime and everything that potentially is out there, it's definitely important to have that service and that signal," he said. "People need to be able to reach each other."

While the city is still in the planning stages, the improvements could be a game-changer for both the safety and success of Rancho Mirage’s community and businesses. For now, residents can stay informed about coverage and look forward to future updates as the city moves forward with plans for better cell phone service.
