Two Indio Middle Schools Named to California’s Prestigious 'Schools to Watch' List
Two Indio middle schools are being recognized for their excellence both inside and outside the classroom. John Glenn Middle School and Indio Middle School have been named to California's prestigious 'Schools to Watch' list by the California Department of Education, honoring campuses with high academic performance and strong social environments.
NBC Palm Springs’ Brett Rosen reports that the recognition goes beyond test scores. “The positive culture of the school environment really, I think, is more important than the test scores,” said Scott Steele, state director for California's Schools to Watch program. “It’s not a check-the-box recognition program—it’s much more.”
Schools undergo a rigorous application process and must reapply every three years to maintain their status. John Glenn Middle School has successfully done so seven times since 2004. Principal Todd Biggert says the honor reflects a mindset of constant growth. “What can we do to improve each one of our practices that got us to where we were last year, so that another three years from now we can be in a better place?”
Indio Middle School Principal Robert Cullinan echoed that commitment, stating, “Being recognized as a California Schools to Watch honoree reflects a relentless dedication of our staff, students, and community in making Indio Middle School a place of excellence.”
One unique benefit for schools on the list is the opportunity to visit other campuses and share best practices. This exchange of ideas allows principals and educators to bring back strategies to further improve instruction, student support, and relationship-building.
Principal Biggert says the pride extends beyond faculty. “I sincerely think our students take pride in everything on campus… the culture of the campus, how well the kids treat each other… it’s a safe, welcoming, and nurturing environment.”

A high-speed police chase in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, came to a dramatic end when the vehicle plunged into Lake Como.
