Festival season is quickly approaching, and with it comes a surge in travel to Palm Springs. As more tourists flock to the desert for events like Coachella, the demand for rental cars has skyrocketed, leading to a significant increase in rental prices. For those arriving at the Palm Springs International Airport (PSP), the cost of renting a car is a noteworthy consideration.
Last Thursday, CheapCarRental.com published a survey revealing that Palm Springs ranks as the most expensive U.S. destination for renting a car this spring. Local consumer experts point to the area's growing popularity and its appeal as a prime tourist destination, particularly during festival season, as key factors driving the price hike.
"The Coachella Valley is attracting more and more visitors every year, not just for festivals but for various sporting events and other attractions throughout the season," said one expert. "This influx of tourists naturally impacts rental car prices."
At the Palm Springs airport, travelers waiting to pick up their rental cars found long lines, and many reported that while the higher prices were expected, they still felt the pinch. One couple from Michigan, who had been visiting the area for years, shared their thoughts:
"It's no surprise. We know it’s Palm Springs, it’s a beautiful city, and we expect prices to be higher because of the location."
Convenience plays a significant role in the higher cost of renting a car at the airport. Experts suggest that renting directly from the airport location comes with a premium since customers are paying for the convenience of picking up their vehicle immediately upon arrival, rather than arranging transportation to an offsite rental location. For those willing to take the extra step, checking nearby rental offices may offer a more affordable alternative.
Comparing rental prices on sites like Hertz and Enterprise showed that shifting the pick-up location from the airport to an offsite location resulted in lower prices, particularly when factoring in additional fees and taxes. It's a simple yet effective way for travelers to save money.
Experts also recommend planning ahead to reduce rental car expenses. Just like booking flights or accommodations, securing a rental car in advance often results in better rates. As demand for rentals spikes in the spring, booking early ensures travelers are able to secure a car at a more reasonable price. The Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) acknowledged the high demand for rental cars, with a spokesperson stating, “While the airport doesn’t set rental car rates, it’s no surprise that demand is high. Spring is one of the busiest and most beautiful times to visit the Greater Palm Springs area, and PSP is proud to be a gateway to this in-demand destination.”

Palm Springs is mourning the loss of beloved entertainer James “Gypsy” Haake, who has died at 94. Haake began his entertainment career at just 19 years old as a Broadway chorus dancer.
