Tesla Owners in Coachella Valley React to Elon Musk Protests and Public Backlash
As protests targeting Tesla and Elon Musk continue across the Coachella Valley, local Tesla owners are sharing how the backlash is affecting them personally.
NBC Palm Springs’ Brett Rosen spoke with multiple Tesla drivers, who expressed mixed emotions. While some say they understand the protests and disagree with Musk's political involvement, others worry about being harassed or targeted simply for driving a Tesla.
“I agree with people being upset over what he's doing and getting involved with the government,” said one Tesla driver. “Am I scared my car might be set on fire or vandalized? Yes.”
Another Tesla owner added, “Honestly, I feel like I’ve gotten a couple of middle fingers just for driving the car. It does scare me.”
Anthony Harrington, who has only owned his Tesla for two weeks, said affordability was a big reason for the purchase — not Elon Musk. “I don’t agree with what Elon is doing, but I needed a car that fit my budget. Now I feel like owning it ties me to him, and that’s a tough position.”
A longtime owner said she’s seen these types of protests before and questions their long-term impact. “People get fired up online, start boycotts, but I rarely see anyone follow through long enough to actually create change.”
While charging stations like the one at The River in Rancho Mirage remain busy, Tesla owners seem split on whether the current backlash will affect future buying decisions. Some say Musk’s increasing role in politics — particularly his support of former President Trump — could change how people view the brand moving forward.
As protests continue, so does the conversation — not just about Elon Musk, but about what it means to own a Tesla in today’s divided climate.

A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office says it had secured protective orders against Kim before a judge later resolved her cases as misdemeanors, released her from custody and terminated those orders.
