Mecca Fire 92% Contained; Evacuations Lifted
Our top story this morning: A significant fire broke out in Mecca yesterday, sparking temporary evacuations in the affected area. The blaze started around 11 a.m. near the intersection of Lincoln Street and 67th Avenue. According to the latest updates, firefighters have now contained 92% of the fire, which burned roughly 13 acres.
Firefighters on the scene detailed their efforts, noting the challenges posed by the limited number of fire hydrants in the area. This shortage required a strategic water shuttle, with water tenders supplementing the efforts of the 19 fire engines on duty. Additionally, a bulldozer was deployed to assist in the firefighting process. In total, 68 personnel were actively working on containing the blaze.
As the situation stabilized, evacuation orders in the area have been lifted, marking a significant step toward returning the community to normalcy. The coordinated response highlights the commitment and resourcefulness of the local firefighting teams in managing this incident.

A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office says it had secured protective orders against Kim before a judge later resolved her cases as misdemeanors, released her from custody and terminated those orders. Now, Kim is expected to be arraigned in connection with her husband’s death. Court records allege the weapon used was a flagpole.
