Quake Jolts Valley, Experts Urge Readiness
Did you feel it? A magnitude 5.2 earthquake shook Southern California early Monday, with residents across the Coachella Valley reporting noticeable tremors. Experts say it's another wake-up call that the "Big One" could strike at any time. Caitlin Kelley spoke with local emergency preparedness leaders about how to stay safe before, during, and after an earthquake. Carla Sullivan Dilley of the Coachella Valley Disaster Preparedness Network emphasized that planning ahead is crucial. She shared that getting under a sturdy table and holding on during a quake can prevent serious injury. Medical professionals echoed that, noting most earthquake injuries happen due to unsecured items falling or people panicking. To stay prepared, residents are encouraged to build emergency go bags and keep them in cars, homes, and workplaces. Identifying and securing hazards in your space can prevent accidents. Planning communication methods and organizing vital documents are also essential steps. Helpful resources are available online through FEMA, California’s Office of Emergency Management, and the US Geological Survey. UPDATE: The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department have confirmed that one person has died and another two were injured after a home explosion on Ocotillo Rd in Twentynine Palms. Security camera video from a nearby neighbor captured the dramatic blast around 8:28 p.m., followed by a fire that brought a massive emergency response from fire and law enforcement agencies across the Morongo Basin. The burning structure has been confirmed as a residence at 6427 Ocotillo Ave. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation and the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Arson/Bomb Detail team is conducting the investigation.
