Experts Urge Coachella Valley Residents to Prepare Now for the Next Earthquake
While many Coachella Valley residents felt the impact of Monday’s 5.2 magnitude earthquake, local experts say the real question is: are you ready for the next one?
NBC Palm Springs reporter Caitlin Kelley spoke with Carla Sullivan Dilley from the Coachella Valley Disaster Preparedness Network (CVDPN), who emphasized the importance of acting before disaster strikes.
“When it comes to an earthquake, if you are not prepared right now, it’s too late,” Dilley warned. She shared that when the quake hit, she quickly took cover under her dining room table and held onto the leg—an action she says can prevent serious injury if done immediately.
Medical professionals also weighed in, noting that many injuries during earthquakes come from unsecured furniture or people panicking and tripping. “People let it happen instead of reacting properly,” one expert explained, pointing to head injuries and broken bones from falling cabinets and rushed movement.
So what can you do today to stay safe tomorrow?
CVDPN recommends the following steps:
Pack a go bag with essentials for home, work, and your car.
Secure your space by anchoring heavy objects and identifying potential hazards.
Create a plan for how you’ll communicate with loved ones during a disaster.
Organize emergency supplies in convenient locations.
Prepare financially by gathering key documents and reviewing insurance options.
It’s not a matter of if another earthquake will strike—it's when. Planning now can make all the difference.

Palm Springs is mourning the loss of beloved entertainer James “Gypsy” Haake, who has died at 94. Haake began his entertainment career at just 19 years old as a Broadway chorus dancer. After retiring from the stage, he returned to performing at 82, becoming the host of Carnival Cabaret at Oscars in downtown Palm Springs.
