New Effort Aims to Protect Endangered Bighorn Sheep on Valley Trails

A new effort is underway in the Coachella Valley to help protect the endangered Peninsular bighorn sheep, and it’s happening right at the trailhead.

Pop-up tents are being set up at popular hiking spots across the region as part of an outreach campaign led by Friends of the Desert Mountains, in partnership with the Bighorn Institute, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

The goal is to educate hikers about the importance of responsible trail use, especially when it comes to dogs. Off-leash dogs—or even leashed dogs in sensitive bighorn habitats—can disrupt feeding and watering routines and endanger young lambs.

Even the presence of a dog can be enough to scare bighorn sheep away from critical resources, conservationists say.

The Peninsular bighorn sheep are listed as an endangered species under the federal Endangered Species Act, and their population is fragile. Human interference, habitat encroachment, and unmanaged recreation continue to pose serious threats.

The educational tents offer trail users information on how to hike responsibly in wildlife-sensitive areas. This includes avoiding restricted zones, observing signage, keeping dogs away from protected routes, and understanding the broader impact hikers can have on local ecosystems.

Nearly a year after wildfires tore through Mountain Center, the scars are still visible along the Palms to Pines Highway. Now, fire crews are working to repair those burn areas and reduce the risk of flooding, erosion and mudslides when heavy rain arrives. The work includes fire-line suppression repairs, water bars and other measures designed to slow rainwater and keep burned soil from washing away. CAL FIRE Riverside County Battalion Chief Ryan Lubin says the steep terrain, dry brush and limited access continue to create challenges for mountain communities. With El Niño conditions expected to bring periods of heavy rain, officials say preparing now could help protect homes and communities from the aftermath of wildfire. The message from firefighters: preparation can save lives.
