Coachella Local Attends Pope Francis Easter Mass
What began as a spiritual pilgrimage ended in global mourning for Coachella Valley native Brenda Salmeron, who stood among thousands at Vatican City on Easter Sunday—just hours before the sudden passing of Pope Francis.
“It was more than a blessing. It felt like a once-in-a-lifetime connection,” Brenda told NBC Palm Springs reporter Brett Rosen. “To hear the news, it was very sad and shocking... I just saw him yesterday.”
Brenda, who traveled to Rome to attend Easter Mass, recalled being in awe as Pope Francis made an unannounced appearance, riding through the crowd in his Popemobile and offering prayers to the masses. Despite recent health concerns, the Pope smiled and interacted with the faithful—what would unknowingly be his final public gesture.
“He was so warm, so human. Even knowing what state he was in, he still showed up and connected with us,” Brenda said. “It was a beautiful, beautiful moment.”
Early Monday morning, the Vatican confirmed the death of Pope Francis at age 88, ending a historic 12-year papacy marked by social outreach, reform efforts, and his status as the first Latin American pope.
Brenda, deeply moved by the experience, said the moment held personal and spiritual meaning. “My grandparents are the pillars of my faith. Being there felt like I was carrying their legacy, like it all came full circle.”
Pope Francis had long resonated with the Hispanic community, something Brenda felt deeply. “He spoke our language—literally and figuratively. He brought humor, love, and humility to every message.”
