Local Catholics Mourn the Pope’s Passing with Prayer and Reflection
Catholic churches across the Coachella Valley opened their doors to mourners today, following news of the Pope’s passing. Among the nearly 15 churches in the Coachella Valley, Sacred Heart Church in Palm Desert welcomed parishioners seeking comfort and community during this time of loss.
Sacred Heart is part of the Diocese of San Bernardino, which extends through Riverside County and is led by Bishop Alberto Rojas. While the bishop has not yet made a formal statement, the faithful have already begun gathering to pray and honor the Pope’s life.
Digital reporter Thalia Hayden visited Sacred Heart this morning, where the atmosphere was reverent and deeply emotional. Parishioners offered prayers, and reflected on the Pope’s spiritual legacy.
“So this morning, Peter, in the first reading, he starts proclaiming the eternity of Jesus Christ and the uncorruptibility of Jesus,” Reverand Ian Hollick shared. “And so to have Peter preaching that first thing Monday morning, and then to hear that the successor of St. Peter has died, made me reflect on what Pope Francis has taught me—namely, to be a priest of mercy, a man of mercy, a bridge to all people.”
The Pope’s teachings resonated with many for his emphasis on compassion, humility, and outreach. “He was an inspiration to many,” said parishioner Michael Francis. “He did things differently, and he was beloved by many. Even speaking about it now—it’s real heartfelt.”
When asked if the Pope’s death was the reason for attending church today, another parishioner responded simply, “Yes. I thought I’d say a prayer—for his soul, and for the church—that we keep going forward in the right direction.”
Others echoed the sentiment, remembering the Pope as a spiritual father who came from humble beginnings and remained grounded in love throughout his papacy. “He was a really good guy. He was loving, and he was a pope from humble origins,” said 11-year-old Daniel Cordova, who is in 5th grade at Sacred Heart School.
Today’s sermons at Sacred Heart and other churches in the valley centered around the Pope’s passing, reminding the faithful of his enduring message: to lead with mercy, humility, and hope.
As the Catholic world mourns, the Coachella Valley community stands united in prayer, remembering not only a religious leader but a global symbol of compassion and faith.

Palm Springs is mourning the loss of beloved entertainer James “Gypsy” Haake, who has died at 94. Haake began his entertainment career at just 19 years old as a Broadway chorus dancer. After retiring from the stage, he returned to performing at 82, becoming the host of Carnival Cabaret at Oscars in downtown Palm Springs. A longtime friend of our station, Haake was a familiar and beloved figure in the Palm Springs entertainment community — and his contributions were recognized with a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.
