Greater Palm Springs Becomes First Certified Autism Destination in Southern California
Greater Palm Springs has achieved a groundbreaking milestone in inclusive travel. On Tuesday, the region was officially named a Certified Autism Destination—the first in Southern California and only the fifth in the world to receive this designation.
The announcement was made at The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, one of the region's key attractions and a leader in promoting accessibility. The certification comes in partnership with the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), a global organization that evaluates and endorses autism-friendly travel initiatives.
“This is definitely a momentous occasion,” said one local leader during the announcement. “It’s not the end of the journey. It’s going to continue. But to be able to see the fruits of all the hard work and the whole community and destination coming together is just a great sight. It doesn’t happen very often.”
The certification process included extensive training and audits of local attractions, hotels, and service providers to ensure they are equipped to meet the needs of autistic and sensory-sensitive travelers. It also reflects a collaborative effort among businesses, nonprofit organizations, and tourism leaders.
Officials with Visit Greater Palm Springs say this recognition not only supports individuals and families who require sensory-friendly environments, but it also strengthens the region’s reputation as an inclusive, thoughtful destination.
Community advocates and tourism leaders believe the designation will have lasting impacts—not just on visitor experiences, but on overall awareness and inclusion efforts throughout the Coachella Valley.

Palm Springs firefighters responded Thursday to a report of a person struck by lightning in the Chino Canyon area. The person was transported to a hospital for medical treatment. Firefighters also responded to a palm tree fire in Chino Canyon that officials say was caused by an apparent lightning strike.
