Rancho Mirage Hosts First Earth Day Cleanup, Inspires Community Action
The city of Rancho Mirage marked a milestone with its first-ever Earth Day celebration, aimed at fostering sustainability and environmental stewardship. The event brought together students, residents, and city partners for a series of community cleanups held the day after Earth Day, underlining the message that caring for the planet shouldn't be limited to one day a year.
On a windy Wednesday, students from Rancho Mirage High School and volunteers from Del Webb Rancho Mirage braved the gusts to take part in their respective cleanup efforts across the city. Led by ASB advisor Brian Beliveau, students tackled litter along Rattler Road, collecting everything from plastic bottles to campaign signs.
“This is our school, this is our community. And for these students, it’s their planet,” said Beliveau, emphasizing the pride students take in keeping their surroundings clean.
Across town, Del Webb residents—partnering with Burrtec and the city—focused their efforts along Bob Hope Drive and surrounding neighborhoods. Organizer John Lacombe shared the importance of their mission, saying, “We want to live in a clean environment. It really has an impact on us when we see those lots full of trash.”
The cleanup teams encountered a variety of discarded items, including old TVs, highlighting how much waste can go unnoticed. Volunteers expressed a shared sense of purpose and responsibility. “Every bit helps, and I feel that I’m doing my part today,” said one student.
By the end of the day, both groups had removed significant amounts of litter, demonstrating the power of collective action. Their hope is that these efforts inspire ongoing environmental care in Rancho Mirage and beyond.

Palm Springs firefighters responded Thursday to a report of a person struck by lightning in the Chino Canyon area. The person was transported to a hospital for medical treatment. Firefighters also responded to a palm tree fire in Chino Canyon that officials say was caused by an apparent lightning strike.
