Coachella Valley Rescue Mission Opens New Shelter for Women and Children
The Coachella Valley Rescue Mission is expanding its impact with the opening of a new shelter dedicated to women and children in need.
Unveiled during a recent ribbon-cutting ceremony, the new Women's and Children's Center 2 adds 10 bedrooms and 60 beds to the mission’s existing campus. The facility offers a safe, supportive environment where mothers and children can begin to rebuild their lives.
“For decades, we’ve been a refuge for the homeless,” said Kristen Crawford, CVRM’s development coordinator. “Now, we’re helping even more families by giving them a place to stay and the resources they need to become self-sufficient.”
The new center includes sleeping spaces, restrooms, books, and areas designed for safety and emotional healing. It aims to help women develop financial independence, secure stable housing, and access critical support services.
Women like Davina Garcia know the value of such spaces. “Twenty-six years ago, I was in a situation of domestic violence and stayed at a shelter,” she said. “Today, I use my story to encourage others—you can do anything with God’s help.”
The expansion cost over $2 million, made possible by $1 million in funding from Riverside County and $1.5 million in community donations.

Palm Springs is mourning the loss of beloved entertainer James “Gypsy” Haake, who has died at 94. Haake began his entertainment career at just 19 years old as a Broadway chorus dancer. After retiring from the stage, he returned to performing at 82, becoming the host of Carnival Cabaret at Oscars in downtown Palm Springs. A longtime friend of our station, Haake was a familiar and beloved figure in the Palm Springs entertainment community — and his contributions were recognized with a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.
