Blowing Sand Creates Ongoing Frustration for Verano Residents in Cathedral City
High winds and drifting sand are stirring up more than just dust in Cathedral City—residents in the Verano neighborhood are growing increasingly frustrated as daily conditions impact their quality of life.
Without clear guidance from city officials or their homeowners association, many are left wondering who’s responsible for mitigating the persistent sand blowing through their streets and yards.
Resident Rafael Oskal voiced his concern, noting he’s tired of not knowing where to turn. “We’ve been receiving some calls from the people in that area,” said John Corrella from Cathedral City’s public works department. “We made a call to the developer, who confirmed that the HOA is responsible for blow sand mitigation and cleanup, especially after wind events.”
According to Corrella, the developer is actively participating in sand cleanup efforts and has assured the city that crews would be out in the neighborhood this week. However, while the city does clean public streets, its priority is on arterial roadways where high-speed traffic makes sand buildup more hazardous. Residential streets, including those in Verano, are lower priority unless a safety concern arises.
Though the Verano community’s streets are considered city roads, the sand cleanup responsibility remains with the HOA. Residents are urged to report issues directly to their association.
Construction in the surrounding area—which could help mitigate some of the dust—is expected to begin in September. However, due to environmental factors including mating season and weather conditions, that timeline could shift.
For now, Verano residents will have to contend with the dusty conditions while hoping for more permanent solutions in the months ahead.
