Student Art Shines at El Paseo: Desert X Art Club Launches Exhibit at Melissa Morgan Fine Art
A celebration of young creativity is now underway in Palm Desert. Desert X Art Club has partnered with the Melissa Morgan Fine Art Gallery to launch a student art exhibit on El Paseo, featuring work from 11 different schools across all three school districts in the Coachella Valley.
The exhibit officially opened its doors Wednesday evening and will run for two weeks, offering the public a free opportunity to view artwork created by students ranging from elementary to high school.
Max Finneran, educator producer with Desert X, says the goal is to help students recognize the value of their creative voices. “We want students to really reflect on the fact that their creative voice is valued, it matters, and can become a part of what is actually like a global conversation,” Finneran said.
The Desert X Art Club began in 2023 and complements classroom instruction by offering hands-on learning experiences, including field trips to Desert X exhibits. Students are then encouraged to reflect and respond with their own art, which culminates in showcases like this one.
“This is the first time this kind of exhibit has been hosted at our gallery,” said Alec Longmuir, director of Melissa Morgan Fine Art. “It gives students a glimpse into what it’s like to see their work displayed in a professional setting.”
Teachers and artists involved in the program say the biggest reward is seeing how students light up when they see their work on display and realize its place in the broader art world.
The exhibit marks a growing partnership between Desert X and local schools, one both the organizers and gallery hope will inspire a future generation of professional artists—perhaps even future Desert X contributors.
The Desert X student art exhibit is open to the public now through May 21 at Melissa Morgan Fine Art on El Paseo in Palm Desert.

Palm Springs is mourning the loss of beloved entertainer James “Gypsy” Haake, who has died at 94. Haake began his entertainment career at just 19 years old as a Broadway chorus dancer. After retiring from the stage, he returned to performing at 82, becoming the host of Carnival Cabaret at Oscars in downtown Palm Springs.
