Indio Celebrates 95 Years: From Railroad Roots to the City of Festivals
We start tonight with a celebration nearly a century in the making—Indio is officially 95 years old. From a small railroad town in the early 1900s to the globally recognized “City of Festivals,” Indio's transformation is one for the history books.
NBC Palm Springs' Brett Rosen was live in downtown Indio, where he spoke with longtime residents, city officials, and business owners who have witnessed the city's dramatic growth.
“In the early 1890s, a railroad station was built here, and people came to work on the railroads. That’s how Indio began to prosper,” said Mayor Pro Tem Elaine Holmes. Around the same time, the region’s rich soil gave rise to a thriving agricultural industry.
Shields Date Garden, one of the region’s oldest agricultural landmarks, has been part of that journey from the very beginning—even before the city’s official incorporation in 1930. “Shields really looked at their 100-year anniversary as a celebration of gratitude,” a representative said, noting the city’s continued support.
Over the decades, Indio’s identity evolved from farming to festivals. Today, it's known worldwide as the home of the Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
And it’s not just entertainment that’s expanding. Schools like Indio High are adapting to reflect the city’s changing economy and population. “We now offer an FFA program, a health academy, and other career pathways that evolved in response to the community’s needs,” said a school official.
Even as the city modernizes, agricultural businesses remain integral to Indio’s identity. “It’s beautiful when the city incorporates education about agriculture alongside its global festivals,” said a Shields representative.
Looking ahead, city officials say they’re just getting started. “Our history is important, and keeping it active is just as important,” said Holmes. “The future is looking so bright.”

A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office says it had secured protective orders against Kim before a judge later resolved her cases as misdemeanors, released her from custody and terminated those orders. Now, Kim is expected to be arraigned in connection with her husband’s death. Court records allege the weapon used was a flagpole.
