Know Before You Go: Slurry Seals, Water Lines & Detours This Week in the Coachella Valley

It’s time to plan your drive smart — and that means Knowing Before You Go. Program Manager Kris Gunterson joined NBC Palm Springs from the CVC Traffic Management Center with a heads-up on this week’s construction hot spots across Cathedral City and Palm Desert.

Cathedral City: Slurry Seal Work in Full Swing

It’s time to catch up on the slurry seal project in Cathedral City — and it’s in full force this week.

🔧 Today’s Focus:
Crews will be working along East Palm Canyon Drive, a key corridor that’s already congested due to overlapping projects in the area. Residential neighborhoods nearby will also see slurry seal treatments, so local traffic should expect detours and slowdowns.

🚗 Best Detour Tips:

  • Stick to Ramon Road for east-west travel.

  • Consider heading even farther north, especially if you’re trying to avoid delays altogether.

Later This Week: Vista Chino Gets the Treatment

By Thursday, work will move up to Vista Chino Drive, also in Cathedral City. This means shifting your travel routes once again.

🧭 Detour Tip:
When Vista Chino is under construction, head south instead. Use Ramon Road or other southern corridors for travel between Cathedral City and Palm Springs.

📅 The slurry seal schedule runs through next week, but most of the heavy work — laying the slurry mixture — should be wrapped up by then. The final week will likely involve striping and manhole adjustments.

Palm Desert: Water Line Work on Cook Street

Meanwhile, in Palm Desert, the water line project continues along Cook Street. This work stretches across both sides of the road depending on the phase, reducing traffic to one lane in each direction.

🌡️ Reminder:
Construction workers are out in the heat, so please slow down and give them plenty of space.

🚧 Suggested Detours:

  • Monterey Avenue

  • Washington Street

These alternate routes can help keep traffic flowing while giving work crews the space they need to get the job done safely.

Stay tuned for next week’s updates, and remember — a little planning goes a long way in avoiding traffic headaches. Whether you’re commuting, running errands, or heading out for summer fun, know before you go and drive safe!
