ICE and Border Patrol Agents Spotted in Cathedral City, At Least One Individual Detained
A visible immigration enforcement operation unfolded in Cathedral City Friday morning, sparking concern among residents. At least nine Border Patrol agents were involved in detaining at least one individual, that individual is being identified by family as a Cathedral City resident named Procopio Calva.
Procopio's brother, Saul Calva, described the morning as a routine day of job searching that quickly turned tragic. "I told you this is going to happen one day. You know, the way the administration we have right now with Donald Trump, you know, we never know. So you walk in in the street and you can be one of them, you know, and this time, my brother is one of them," Saul said, recounting previous conversations with his brother about the risks of being undocumented individual who had previously voluntarily deported himself 20 years ago. Legal advocates at TODEC Legal Center say the situation appears to be a targeted operation aimed at individuals with a detention order or a criminal history. Luz Gallegos, Executive Director of TODEC, emphasized the need for undocumented individuals to have action plans prepared—including proof of residency exceeding two years—to protect their rights to due process. As of now, Saul has not been able to contact his brother since his detainment. TODEC continues to provide support for affected families, calling for greater awareness and legal preparedness amid rising fears of immigration enforcement in the region.
