Cahuilla Fire Spreads Quickly Near Anza as Crews Battle Flames
A fast-moving wildfire in the Anza area prompted a major firefighting response Tuesday afternoon, as flames spread quickly through dry hillside brush.
Named the Cahuilla Fire, the blaze was reported around 12:25 p.m. near the 52700 block of Highway 371. CAL FIRE responded with multiple engines and hand crews, as well as air support. When the first tankers arrived, flames had already made their way onto a nearby hillside, advancing rapidly to the southeast.
As of 1:15 p.m., the fire had burned an estimated 75 acres, with the potential to grow up to 500 acres. Six air tankers and four helicopters were requested, though just two tankers were overhead by 1:20 p.m.
The fire was burning away from the Cahuilla Casino grounds. While no structures were immediately threatened, officials anticipated issuing evacuation warnings for a handful of properties in the area.
No roads have been closed, and the cause of the fire has not yet been determined. The Anza region has experienced several summer wildfires in recent years due to dry conditions and rugged terrain.
