Betty Ford Center Highlights Men’s Mental Health This Father’s Day
As Father’s Day approaches, the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage is urging men to take a closer look at their mental health and seek the support they deserve. With nearly one in ten men experiencing depression or anxiety—and fewer than half receiving treatment—advocates are hoping to shift the narrative from silence to strength.
One of those advocates is Robert Lewallen. Standing in the cafeteria of the Betty Ford Center, Robert vividly remembers the date of his last drink—a turning point that marked the beginning of his recovery. After years of binge drinking, he realized that change was necessary for a better life.
Robert’s story is a testament to the power of seeking help. When cravings return, he recalls that crucial moment and the healthier life he's built since entering treatment. His journey underscores how recovery isn’t just about quitting a substance—it’s about regaining control, purpose, and peace of mind.
Melissa Hawkins, a clinical supervisor at the center, hopes that Father’s Day can spark conversations around emotional well-being and mental health treatment for men.
This Father’s Day, the message is clear: caring for your mental health is one of the strongest things a man can do.
