Tel Aviv on Edge: Pride Celebration Shaken by Conflict as Desert Jewish Federation Leaders Return Home
Danny Labin, CEO of the Jewish Federation of the Desert, returned home to Rancho Mirage this week after leading a mission of over 100 LGBTQ+ Jewish leaders from North America to Tel Aviv. Their goal was to attend and support the city’s annual Pride Parade—an event known for resilience and unity amid regional instability. However, the tone shifted dramatically after the bombings late last Friday.
"I remember hearing the voice on the loudspeaker—it was a live voice saying, 'Wake up, wake up. Israel and Iran are at war. Go to the shelter,'" Labin recalled, describing the chaos that unfolded at 3:15 a.m. in his Tel Aviv hotel room. Sirens blared, and guests scrambled to safety as missile threats became reality.
Labin says every participant on the mission was aware of the risks—but the experience proved far more intense than many had anticipated.
"It’s fair to say the entire country was scared. We were scared," he said. “But it didn’t deter our purpose. It added to it.”
The delegation, representing Jewish Federations from across the U.S. and Canada, had gathered not just to celebrate Pride, but to show support for Israeli civil society. Labin noted that over the past 20 months, the Jewish Federation of North America has raised more than $850 million in aid for Israel. These funds support everything from trauma recovery to basic services for those impacted by the conflict.
"Being there during this time—witnessing the work on the ground firsthand—only reaffirmed our commitment," Labin said. “We saw the power of community, the strength of Federation, and the tireless efforts of hundreds of organizations dedicated to helping Israelis rebuild their lives.”
Despite the fear, Labin and others say the trip brought clarity and resolve. "We didn’t leave with less purpose—we came back with more."
Now safely home, the Jewish Federation of the Desert is planning a community forum this Monday at 11 a.m., inviting locals to learn more about the situation in Israel and what can be done to support those affected.
