The Hidden Culprit Behind High Summer Power Bills
As the summer sun intensifies across the Coachella Valley, many residents are bracing for the seasonal spike in their electric bills. But before blaming your air conditioner or thermostat, experts say you might want to look a little closer—at your doors, vents, and even ceilings. NBC Palm Springs’ Mary Strong went on-site with local HVAC expert Dan Cornelius from Dan Only HVAC to uncover the often-overlooked issue of air infiltration. This phenomenon occurs when hot outdoor air seeps into your home through small cracks and gaps, forcing your air conditioner to work harder than necessary to maintain a cool temperature indoors.
“Just around this door frame alone, the amount of heat getting in could be equivalent to leaving a window open,” Dan explained during a home inspection in La Quinta. “If you add up all the cracks and gaps, it can have a major impact on your comfort and your power bill.”
Simple Fixes That Add Up
The good news? Solutions are relatively simple—and affordable. Dan recommends:
Sealing doors and windows with caulk or weatherstripping
Inspecting air vents for gaps between the ductwork and drywall
Changing air filters monthly to ensure optimal airflow
Cleaning your outdoor condenser unit regularly with a hose
Perhaps most surprising: how we manage our thermostats can also affect cooling efficiency. “Set your thermostat to 78°F and just leave it,” Dan advised. “Letting the temperature rise and fall constantly only makes your system work harder.”
Up to 50% Savings Possible
According to Dan, combining these steps—especially addressing infiltration—can cut cooling costs by as much as 50%. “It’s not just about comfort,” he said. “It’s about not wasting energy or money.”
As summer continues to heat up, now may be the perfect time to make small changes that result in big savings.
