Beloved Indio Burger Box Reopens After Nearly a Year
An Indio favorite is making a big comeback. Burger Box, the iconic burger stand on Indio Boulevard that closed its doors in October 2024, has officially reopened, drawing lines of customers eager to enjoy its classic menu once again.
The restaurant, which had been a community staple for 70 years under the ownership of George Mitchell and his family, is now in the hands of new owners who are committed to preserving its legacy. Longtime customers say Burger Box is more than just a place to eat — it’s a cherished tradition tied to fond memories of family meals and friendly service.
“I remember being here as a kid, and Mr. George always had a smile, asking me about my day,” said one local. “Now I get to work here and carry on his legacy.”
The reopening was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Indio city officials, who said the return of Burger Box reflects the city’s growth and community pride.
Christian Ruiz, son of the new owners, says the project has been a labor of love for his parents. “From painting the walls to redoing the floors, my dad has put his heart into every detail. It’s incredible to see it all come together,” he said.
With the familiar sounds of sizzling patties and bubbling fryers filling the air, and cars once again lining up for their orders, Burger Box is back to serving up the flavors that have made it an Indio institution for generations.
