Costco to Stop Selling Abortion Pill Mifepristone Amid Low Demand
Costco says it will no longer carry the abortion pill Mifepristone in its pharmacies. The wholesale retailer confirmed the decision, citing a lack of demand from customers.
The move comes after faith-based groups urged Costco not to stock the drug, which is used in combination with another medication to end a pregnancy within the first 10 weeks of gestation. The company did not comment on whether those appeals influenced its decision.
Mifepristone has been a focal point for anti-abortion activists and is often at the center of ongoing debates over reproductive health access in the United States. The medication has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for more than two decades, but it continues to draw political and legal challenges nationwide.
Costco has not announced whether it will reconsider the decision in the future or if the change will affect all of its pharmacy locations.
