Indoor Pickleball Keeps Players Active Through Coachella Valley Heat
Pickleball has quickly become one of the most popular sports in the Coachella Valley, drawing players of all ages. But as summer brings triple-digit heat, playing outdoors can be nearly impossible. To keep the game going year-round, several valley cities are offering indoor pickleball at local community centers.
The Palm Desert Community Center is one of the busiest hubs, with open play available Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. In Palm Springs, the DeMuth Community Center hosts sessions six days a week from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cathedral City’s Salvation Army Davis Center welcomes players Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 4 p.m., while the Indio Community Center also opens its doors three days a week.
Players say the benefits go far beyond escaping the heat. For many, pickleball is a way to stay active, meet new people, and enjoy a friendly, social environment. “Pickleball players are the nicest people around,” one participant shared. “You can always find a game at your level, whether you’re just starting or playing competitively.”
Drop-in fees are typically around $5, and frequent players can take advantage of discounted yearly memberships offered to local residents. With indoor options expanding, the Coachella Valley continues to strengthen its reputation as a pickleball hotspot, proving that even summer heat can’t stop the sport’s momentum.

UPDATE: The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department have confirmed that one person has died and another two were injured after a home explosion on Ocotillo Rd in Twentynine Palms. Security camera video from a nearby neighbor captured the dramatic blast around 8:28 p.m., followed by a fire that brought a massive emergency response from fire and law enforcement agencies across the Morongo Basin. The burning structure has been confirmed as a residence at 6427 Ocotillo Ave. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation and the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Arson/Bomb Detail team is conducting the investigation.
