Palm Springs Philanthropist Harold Matzner Dies at 88

The Coachella Valley is mourning the loss of one of its most influential community leaders. Harold Matzner, philanthropist, entrepreneur, and chairman of the Palm Springs International Film Festival, has died at the age of 88.

Matzner made the Coachella Valley his home for more than three decades, where he quickly became one of the region’s most generous benefactors. Since 2000, he contributed an estimated $70 to $80 million to local nonprofits, supporting organizations including the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center, Desert AIDS Project, and numerous other charitable causes.

Beyond philanthropy, Matzner played a central role in shaping the modern Palm Springs we know today. He was instrumental in the creation of Measure J, a voter-approved 1% sales tax that funded a $200 million downtown revitalization program while continuing to generate $12 million annually for infrastructure improvements.

He also owned Spencer’s Restaurant, a beloved local dining spot, and was a key cultural figure in building the valley’s reputation as a hub for arts, film, and community engagement. Palm Springs Mayor Rhonda Hart reflected on his impact, noting that his leadership transformed the Palm Springs International Film Festival into a world-class event and a cornerstone of awards season.
