Teaching with Heart
Talking with Thalia, "Coffee Talk": At Hot Lips Coffee in Cathedral City, Thalia speaks with Don, a former third-grade teacher from the Palm Springs Unified School District with 14 years of experience. Don shares his perspective on the importance of teaching not just academic skills, but also emotional intelligence — the "intelligence of the heart." He emphasizes the role of educators in nurturing both the minds and hearts of children, who represent the future leaders of the Coachella Valley. Don believes that many children already arrive with natural emotional depth, and it's up to teachers to draw that out and validate different forms of intelligence. Looking ahead, he advocates for an educational approach that balances living in the moment with preparing for a better, more compassionate future.
