Local Animal Shelters at 229% Capacity Urgently Plea for Public Help

Animal shelters throughout the county are bursting at the seams, now operating at an unprecedented 229% capacity. The situation has become critical, prompting an urgent call for help from the public.

While overcrowding is not a new issue, shelter officials say this level of intake is far beyond what they can manage. "We’re in emergency territory," one shelter spokesperson shared. “We simply don’t have the space or resources to keep up. We need our community now more than ever.”

In an effort to ease the burden, the county is waiving all adoption fees until shelters can get back under capacity. Additionally, the county has extended shelter hours on Wednesdays until 7 p.m. to allow more people the opportunity to visit after work. Regular hours remain Monday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Coachella Valley Animal Campus in Thousand Palms is one of the most affected local shelters. Staff there report every kennel and temporary space is filled, and they’re running out of options.

But even if you can’t adopt a pet permanently, there are other meaningful ways to help:

  • Foster a pet for a few weeks — even short-term fosters can make a huge difference in relieving overcrowding.

  • Volunteer to take a dog out for the day, giving them much-needed exercise and a break from the stressful shelter environment.

"Just a few hours outside the shelter can greatly improve a dog’s mental well-being," said a volunteer coordinator. “And it helps them become more adoptable, too.”

Whether you're ready to adopt, foster, or volunteer, your local shelter needs you. Visit the Coachella Valley Animal Campus in Thousand Palms or check your nearest shelter’s website for more details.

Together, we can give these animals a chance — and help restore balance to a system in crisis.
