Residents Rally in Palm Desert as Government Shutdown Impacts Services
The government shutdown that began just after midnight has sparked frustration and concern across the Coachella Valley, with residents rallying in Palm Desert to call for action from lawmakers.
Among those attending was Dallas, a former California government worker, who said the shutdown sends the wrong message to communities and federal employees. “It’s a shame because it’s going to be tweaked to fire federal workers in their efficiency objective, and I don’t get that at all,” he said.
Rally organizers urged Congressman Ken Calvert to show up and address local concerns, saying the community simply wants the government to “function properly with pride.” Calvert maintains two district offices, one in Corona and another in Palm Desert.
Officials have reassured the public that Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans’ benefits will continue for now. However, programs like SNAP and WIC could be interrupted if the shutdown drags on, leaving families without vital food assistance.
The shutdown has already left many federal workers uncertain about their paychecks, while future impacts could ripple out to local services and the broader economy if no deal is reached soon.
