Palm Desert Council Considers Rescinding LGBTQ+ Pride Month Recognition
The City of Palm Desert is considering a potential shift in its approach to recognizing LGBTQ+ Pride Month, following comments made during a recent city council meeting. Mayor Pro Tem Joe Pradetto requested that the city reevaluate and possibly rescind a resolution that currently allows Palm Desert to display a banner in support of the LGBTQ+ community.
The discussion comes just a month after the city displayed a banner recognizing LGBTQ+ residents and Palm Springs Pride. Pradetto said his proposal is rooted in concerns raised by some residents who feel recognition of specific groups creates division rather than unity. According to Pradetto, the intent is not to exclude any group, but to remove the city from what he describes as involvement in residents’ private lives. He emphasized his desire for all community members to be treated equally, without the city appearing to favor one group over another. Some residents, however, expressed concern that removing visible support could negatively impact the LGBTQ+ community, noting the challenges and discrimination many have historically faced. City officials say before any action is taken, the issue will be discussed further in a study session that will allow all councilmembers to weigh in and provide public input.
The proposed change could be placed on a future city council agenda as early as January.

Palm Springs firefighters responded Thursday to a report of a person struck by lightning in the Chino Canyon area. The person was transported to a hospital for medical treatment. Firefighters also responded to a palm tree fire in Chino Canyon that officials say was caused by an apparent lightning strike.
