Family of Cathedral City Man Killed by Sheriff’s Deputy Wins $13.1M Verdict
The family of a Cathedral City man shot and killed by a Riverside County Sheriff’s deputy has been awarded millions of dollars following a federal civil trial, according to attorneys representing the family.
A jury ruled in favor of the parents of Jeffrey Alexander Monroy, finding that Riverside County used excessive force during the incident. Family attorneys say the verdict is the largest excessive-force judgment ever returned against Riverside County.
The shooting occurred in August 2020 while Monroy was working for his father’s pool service in Rancho Mirage. Court records show Monroe was struggling with mental illness at the time. He reportedly became agitated and walked away from the job site.
Deputies responded after a neighbor reported suspicious activity. During a confrontation, authorities say Monroy stabbed a deputy with a screwdriver. Family attorneys argued that the situation was already de-escalating when a deputy shot Monroy multiple times in the back.
Riverside County has denied any wrongdoing in the case. It remains unclear whether the county plans to file an appeal.
The verdict adds to ongoing scrutiny over law enforcement responses to mental health crises and the use of force during encounters involving individuals in distress.
