Coachella Valley Cities Offer Free Sandbags, Emergency Alerts Ahead of Storm
Local cities across the Coachella Valley are stepping up efforts to help residents prepare ahead of incoming storm conditions by offering free sandbags and encouraging sign-ups for emergency alert systems.
In Palm Desert, the city is providing free sand and sandbags for residents. Sand is available at the north end of the Civic Center Dog Park, next to the baseball fields. Sandbags can be found inside the Development Services lobby at City Hall, located off Fred Waring Drive.
The sandbags are available on a first-come, first-served basis, with a limit of 15 sandbags per resident. Residents can pick them up after City Hall closes, but must bring their own shovel.
Palm Desert officials also encourage residents to sign up for Nixle alerts, which provide weather warnings and other critical information sent directly to phones or email inboxes.
The City of La Quinta is also offering free sandbags for residents. Pickup locations are listed on-screen and are self-serve, so residents should bring their own shovel. Officials recommend filling sandbags about half to two-thirds full for proper use.
Meanwhile, Palm Springs is urging residents to register for Community Alerts, the city’s emergency notification system. The service provides timely and urgent notifications through text messages or voice calls to home phones, cell phones, and computers.
These alerts may include information about fire evacuations, shelter or transportation options during disasters, and other public safety incidents. Residents can sign up on the Palm Springs City Government website by clicking the Government tab and selecting “Register for Community Alerts.”
Palm Springs residents seeking sandbags can pick them up at any of the city’s five fire stations, which are displayed on-screen. A fresh pile of sand is also available at Palm Springs City Hall, located in the back parking lot.
Other Coachella Valley cities with emergency notification systems include Indio, Cathedral City, La Quinta, and Coachella. Residents can also sign up for Alert RivCo, which provides emergency notifications for all of Riverside County, especially for those whose cities do not have their own alert system.
In Desert Hot Springs, the city is also providing community support ahead of Tuesday night’s storm. Sandbag pickup is available for residents from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., at three fire stations throughout the city. Locations are listed on-screen.
Officials across the region encourage residents to prepare early and stay informed as weather conditions develop.
