Beloved Stray Cat Killed in Suspected BB Gun Attack, Neighbors Seek Justice
A quiet neighborhood in Bermuda Dunes is mourning the loss of a beloved stray cat after what authorities believe may have been a case of animal cruelty. The cat, affectionately named Celebi after a Pokémon character, was cared for by several neighbors along Avenue 42 and frequently stayed with residents Esther and Gilberto Menchaca, who considered her part of their family.
According to the Menchacas, Celebi began behaving unusually one day, showing visible difficulty opening her mouth and eating. Concerned for her health, they sought help, and an animal control officer later transported the cat to the Coachella Valley Animal Campus for treatment. Veterinarians there determined that Celebi appeared to have been struck multiple times by a BB gun projectile, with injuries to her face and throat that ultimately led to her death.
The incident has unsettled residents in the area, many of whom worry about the safety of other animals in the neighborhood. NBC Palm Springs reached out to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, which stated it is not aware of similar recent incidents. However, officials emphasized that intentionally harming or killing an animal is a serious offense under California Penal Code Section 597. Violations can be charged as either a misdemeanor or felony and may result in up to one year in jail, fines reaching $20,000, or both.
As the investigation continues, the Menchaca family has honored Celebi’s memory by placing a Pokémon card outside their home. They hope sharing her story will bring awareness to animal cruelty and help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
