Palm Springs Council to Decide on $6 Million Affordable Housing Investment Tonight
The Palm Springs City Council will consider nearly $6 million in public investment for two affordable housing projects at tonight's meeting, including one that's drawn opposition from nearby residents.
The main item is a public hearing on an 82-unit affordable housing complex proposed for a 4-acre undeveloped parcel at 305 West San Rafael Drive. The Planning Commission already approved the project, but neighbors have filed an appeal asking the council to overturn that decision. City staff is recommending the council reject the appeal and let the approval stand.
If the project moves forward, the council will also vote on a $3.8 million loan commitment to developer Red Tail Multifamily Land Development for construction.
A second affordable housing project is also on the agenda: a 110-unit development at McCarthy Road and San Rafael Drive. The council will consider approving $2.25 million in funding to Pacific West Communities for land acquisition on the roughly 5-acre site, plus up to $2.5 million in deferred development fees structured as a loan.
Both projects would be 100% affordable housing and qualify for fee reductions under the city's Affordable and Multi-Family Housing Incentive Program.
Combined, the two developments would add 192 affordable units to Palm Springs with a total public investment of approximately $6 million.
The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at Palm Springs City Hall.
