Surf Cycle Event in Coachella Valley Combines Fitness and Dog Adoption to Help Overcrowded Shelters

Animal shelters across the Coachella Valley are facing increasing pressure as more dogs need permanent homes, and one local business is stepping up with a creative solution.

Surf Cycle is partnering with Desert Paws Sanctuary and other local organizations to host an event called “Pedal for Pups,” combining fitness with pet adoption. The event is designed to bring the community together while helping dogs find loving homes.

Studio co-owner Michelle says the idea is simple: connect people who already value active lifestyles with pets that need care and companionship. Participants can join a cycling session while also meeting adoptable dogs in a welcoming, community-focused environment.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, March 21, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a $15 drop-in fee. Organizers hope the combination of fitness and philanthropy will draw a wide range of participants.

Representatives from Desert Paws Sanctuary say their kennels are currently full, making adoption events like this especially important. They note that when one dog is adopted, it opens space for another animal in need.

Attendees say the event not only promotes healthy living but also provides a meaningful way to give back. For many, it’s a chance to find a new companion while supporting a growing need in the community.

Organizers hope the event inspires more people to consider adoption and helps more dogs across the desert find their forever homes.

Nearly a year after wildfires tore through Mountain Center, the scars are still visible along the Palms to Pines Highway. Now, fire crews are working to repair those burn areas and reduce the risk of flooding, erosion and mudslides when heavy rain arrives. The work includes fire-line suppression repairs, water bars and other measures designed to slow rainwater and keep burned soil from washing away. CAL FIRE Riverside County Battalion Chief Ryan Lubin says the steep terrain, dry brush and limited access continue to create challenges for mountain communities. With El Niño conditions expected to bring periods of heavy rain, officials say preparing now could help protect homes and communities from the aftermath of wildfire. The message from firefighters: preparation can save lives.
