Experts say this time of year brings increased rattlesnake movement, making encounters with humans and pets more likely. At El Paseo Animal Hospital, Dr. David Jefferies warns that both hikers and pet owners need to stay alert while spending time outside.
Recent reports of fatal rattlesnake bites in Southern California have heightened concern, prompting renewed calls for awareness and preparedness. During mating season, rattlesnakes are more active and may travel beyond their usual habitats, increasing the chances of unexpected encounters on trails and in neighborhoods.
Local hikers say preparation is key before heading out, from staying on designated paths to remaining vigilant of their surroundings. Experts emphasize that recognizing warning signs — such as the distinct rattling sound — can help prevent dangerous situations.
Dr. Jefferies also stresses the importance of knowing what to do if a bite occurs. For humans, immediate medical attention is critical. For pets, owners should seek emergency veterinary care without delay, as quick treatment can be life-saving.
