Supreme Court ruling on conversion therapy raises concerns among local advocates
A recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court is raising new concerns about protections for LGBTQ+ youth across the country.
In an 8–1 ruling, the court found that a Colorado law banning conversion therapy for minors likely violates First Amendment protections, arguing the law restricts what therapists can say, not just what they do. The decision could have broader implications for more than 20 states, including California, where conversion therapy for minors is currently banned.
NBC Palm Springs anchor Mary Strong spoke with Paulo Anthony Grayson, CEO of No Matter What Recovery in Los Angeles, to better understand what this ruling could mean for families and the LGBTQ+ community. Grayson explained that conversion therapy refers to efforts aimed at changing a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity, practices widely criticized by medical and mental health organizations. He expressed concern that the ruling could weaken protections and open the door to broader legal challenges, even in states where bans are currently in place.
“This creates uncertainty,” Grayson said, noting that families and young people may feel increased anxiety about access to affirming care.
He added that the mental health impacts of conversion therapy can be significant, including higher risks of depression, anxiety, and trauma among youth who experience it. Grayson emphasized the importance of affirming, supportive environments for LGBTQ+ youth and encouraged parents to seek licensed professionals who prioritize acceptance and well-being. While the long-term legal impact of the ruling remains to be seen, advocates say the conversation highlights the need for continued awareness and education around mental health and support for vulnerable communities.

Nearly a year after wildfires tore through Mountain Center, the scars are still visible along the Palms to Pines Highway.
