Indio hosts free Chella event with live music ahead of Coachella weekend two
Festival season is in full swing in the Coachella Valley, and Indio is keeping the energy going with a free community celebration in the heart of downtown.
The Chella event is taking over center stage, offering live music, food, and dancing as residents and visitors gear up for the second weekend of Coachella. The outdoor celebration is designed to bring the community together while showcasing local and regional talent.
One of the featured acts is Tropa Magica, a duo from East Los Angeles known for their unique blend of psychedelic cumbia and punk. The brothers behind the band say fans can expect a high-energy performance that mixes rock, rhythm, and a vibrant cultural sound.
The event highlights the growing popularity of Indio’s downtown as a hub for live entertainment during festival season, giving people a chance to enjoy music without needing a festival pass.
Along with the music, the weather is also cooperating. Temperatures are expected to stay comfortable in the low 80s heading into the weekend, before heating up into the 90s by Sunday—perfect conditions for outdoor events and late-night performances.

Palm Springs is mourning the loss of beloved entertainer James “Gypsy” Haake, who has died at 94. Haake began his entertainment career at just 19 years old as a Broadway chorus dancer. After retiring from the stage, he returned to performing at 82, becoming the host of Carnival Cabaret at Oscars in downtown Palm Springs. A longtime friend of our station, Haake was a familiar and beloved figure in the Palm Springs entertainment community — and his contributions were recognized with a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.
