Loving Way Foundation Launches Child Safety Program During Child Abuse Prevention Month
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness and encouraging open conversations about protecting children. In an interview with NBC Palm Springs, anchor Mary Strong spoke with Loving Way Foundation founder Dawn McCoy about a new initiative aimed at empowering kids and supporting families.
The Loving Way Foundation focuses on child abuse prevention through education, advocacy, and community outreach. McCoy, who is also the mother of a child abuse survivor, says her personal experience drives her mission to help other families recognize warning signs and create safe environments for children.
At the center of that effort is the foundation’s new program, “I Deserve to Feel Safe.” Designed specifically for children, the campaign helps young people understand what safety feels like, identify trusted adults, and recognize situations that may be harmful or uncomfortable.
McCoy explained that the program uses simple, age-appropriate tools to encourage communication between children and caregivers. One key component is a worksheet that guides kids through questions about safe and unsafe feelings, as well as who they can turn to for help. The goal is to give children the language and confidence to speak up. The program also teaches children how to recognize signs that something may be wrong, such as feeling scared, confused, or pressured to keep secrets. By helping kids trust their instincts and speak openly, McCoy says families can take an important step toward prevention.
In addition to launching the new campaign, McCoy highlighted the importance of community support and awareness. She encouraged families to attend the Crime Victims’ Vigil taking place at Civic Center Park in Palm Desert, an event that honors victims and brings attention to the impact of crime on families. The Loving Way Foundation is continuing to expand its outreach through social media, community events, and partnerships with schools and organizations. McCoy says starting conversations at home is one of the most powerful tools parents have.

Nearly a year after wildfires tore through Mountain Center, the scars are still visible along the Palms to Pines Highway.
