Coachella Valley Celebrates Volunteer Appreciation Week: 'Without Them, We Wouldn’t Exist'
Nonprofits throughout the Coachella Valley are taking time this week to celebrate the lifeblood of their organizations: the volunteers. During National Volunteer Appreciation Week, local leaders are making it clear that without the dedicated service of neighbors helping neighbors, many essential programs and daily operations would simply cease to exist.
At the Cathedral City Senior Center, officials describe their agency as a "volunteer-driven" organization at its core. With a small professional staff, the center relies heavily on those who donate their time to provide a wide range of activities and support services for older residents. Leaders at the center emphasized that the primary reason they are successfully able to meet the diverse needs of the local senior population is the unwavering commitment of their volunteer team.
Among those dedicated individuals is Tom Turner, who has been donating his time to the Senior Center full-time for the past six years. Averaging over 25 hours a week, Turner assists with various activities and logistical needs around the nonprofit. For Turner, the experience has been transformative; he notes that volunteering shifted his life from being "one-dimensional" to "multidimensional," moving his focus away from himself and toward the well-being of those he helps.
The opportunities to give back in the desert are as varied as the community itself. For those who prefer working with animals, the Palm Springs Animal Shelter offers a chance to help furry friends find their forever homes. Volunteers at the shelter describe the immense emotional reward of working with animals—sometimes taking a cat from a hostile disposition to being a gentle companion ready to spend its life with a new family.
