Palm Springs Nonprofit Serving Homeless Forced to Vacate Longtime Location
A longtime nonprofit in Palm Springs that serves the unhoused is being forced out of its downtown location.
Well in the Desert, which provides meals five days a week, says its lease has been terminated and it must vacate the property by May 27.
Organization leaders say the site is critical to their operations, serving roughly 250 families each Saturday alone. After 16 years at the location, they say the short notice leaves them without a clear plan for relocation.
The building is owned by Grit Development, which says the facility is no longer usable. However, leaders with Well in the Desert believe the move could be connected to potential city plans for a new fire station nearby.
In a statement, the City of Palm Springs said the situation is a matter between the property owner and tenant, but added it is hopeful a new location will be found for the organization.
NBC Palm Springs has also reached out to the Palm Springs Fire Department for comment and is still awaiting a response.

Nearly a year after wildfires tore through Mountain Center, the scars are still visible along the Palms to Pines Highway. Now, fire crews are working to repair those burn areas and reduce the risk of flooding, erosion and mudslides when heavy rain arrives.
